Economic Development Insights
In 2003 and again in 2006, the City undertook a Community Survey, obtaining valuable insight of issues foremost on residents' minds, many falling within the economic development arena.
When asked to consider a variety of current issues in the community, two economic development items emerged as primary concerns:
- Attracting new businesses to UA.
- Redeveloping Kingsdale Shopping Center.
When probed further:
- A majority of residents agree the City should expand its commercial tax base.
- They believe Kingsdale should be redeveloped as a town center with a variety of uses, and the City should take an aggressive role in facilitating this redevelopment.
- Residents agree the City should use tools like Tax Increment Financing to attract businesses, as other communities do.
Such feedback confirms that continuing efforts to prioritize and pursue various economic development activities are on track with resident sentiments.
From a communications standpoint, survey results indicated efforts should be enhanced to relay news of economic development activities and results. It was also apparent that information on City funding sources, and the variations in fiscal versus quality of life benefits that different business types bring to the community would be beneficial.
This Economic Development Insight section is intended to help residents be informed of the factors leading to the economic development activities, programs and policies in place, as well provide an overview of the impact a proactive economic development program can and is having on our community.
